What it is and who it suits
The General Bachillerato is the fourth modalidad under the LOMLOE. It is designed for a broad education: it combines subjects from different areas instead of specialising in one.
It suits students with very varied interests, students who do not know yet what they want to study and students who prefer not to narrow down early. Not every school offers it.
02
Subjects in the General Bachillerato
Under the national rules. Your region and your school set the exact offer and the electives.
Common subjects
First year: Physical Education, Philosophy, Spanish Language and Literature I and Foreign Language I (plus the co-official language, where there is one). Second year: History of Spain, History of Philosophy, Spanish Language and Literature II and Foreign Language II (plus the co-official language, where there is one).
First-year modalidad subjects
General Mathematics is compulsory. Plus two subjects chosen from all the first-year modalidad subjects your school offers, which must include Economics, Entrepreneurship and Business Activity.
Second-year modalidad subjects
General Sciences is compulsory. Plus two subjects chosen from all the second-year modalidad subjects your school offers, which must include Cultural and Artistic Movements.
03
What goes into the PAU
In the compulsory phase of the PAU you sit the second-year common subjects and General Sciences, your compulsory modalidad subject.
You can then sit other modalidad subjects to raise your admission mark. As General Sciences is new, check how the universities and degrees you like value it in their weightings.
04
What you can study with the General Bachillerato
Any degree, like the other modalidades. Some common choices:
Broad-profile degrees
Social Work, Education, Tourism, Sports Science, Communication.
Degrees that look for specific subjects
If a science, health or engineering degree interests you, choose the modalidad subjects it weights most in both years.
Higher vocational education
Any field. A higher vocational course can also lead on to university.
05
How to tell if it is your modalidad
The General Bachillerato is a good option if very different things interest you or you are not sure yet. But choosing it does not avoid deciding: the two subjects you pick each year still count in the PAU.
Any Bachillerato modalidad gives access to any university degree. What changes is which subjects you take into the PAU and which can be weighted for the degree you want. Talk to your school counselor to choose your subjects well.
