Science and Technology Bachillerato: subjects and which degrees you can study

It is the modalidad for those who enjoy maths, physics, chemistry or biology. It leads naturally to health, engineering and science degrees, and closes none of the others.

01

What it is and who it suits

The Science and Technology Bachillerato (Ciencias y Tecnología) is one of the four modalidades under Spain’s LOMLOE. It is designed for students who want to study something related to health, engineering, architecture or the sciences, and for those who simply enjoy solving problems.

You do not need to have everything clear. Many students choose it because it keeps many options open, and that is a good reason as long as you enjoy its subjects, because it means two years of steady work.

02

Subjects in the Science and Technology Bachillerato

Under the national rules. Your region and your school set the exact offer and the electives.

  1. Common subjects

First year: Physical Education, Philosophy, Spanish Language and Literature I and Foreign Language I (plus the co-official language, where there is one). Second year: History of Spain, History of Philosophy, Spanish Language and Literature II and Foreign Language II (plus the co-official language, where there is one).

  2. First-year modalidad subjects

Matemáticas I is compulsory. Plus two subjects chosen from: Biology, Geology and Environmental Sciences; Technical Drawing I; Physics and Chemistry; and Technology and Engineering I.

  3. Second-year modalidad subjects

Matemáticas II or Mathematics Applied to the Social Sciences II, your choice. Plus two subjects from: Biology; Technical Drawing II; Physics; Geology and Environmental Sciences; Chemistry; and Technology and Engineering II.

03

What goes into the PAU

In the compulsory phase of the PAU (Spain’s university entrance exam) you sit the second-year common subjects and your compulsory modalidad subject: Matemáticas II or Mathematics Applied to the Social Sciences II, whichever you took.

You can then sit other modalidad subjects to raise your admission mark. For health degrees, Biology and Chemistry are usually weighted; for engineering, Physics, Matemáticas II or Technical Drawing II. Each university publishes its weightings, so check them before choosing your second-year subjects.

04

Which degrees you can study with the Science Bachillerato

The most common choices after this modalidad. Not a closed list.

  1. Health sciences

Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nutrition, Veterinary Science. They usually look for Biology and Chemistry in the second year.

  2. Engineering and architecture

Industrial, computer, telecommunications, civil or aerospace engineering, and Architecture. They usually look for Physics, Matemáticas II or Technical Drawing II.

  3. Sciences

Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences, Geology.

  4. Higher vocational education

Courses in Health, Computing, Electricity and Electronics, Chemistry or Building, among others. A higher vocational course can also lead on to university.

05

How to tell if it is your modalidad

Ask yourself whether you enjoy maths and at least one science, not only whether you are good at them. Two years of Maths, Physics or Biology are much easier when they interest you.

If you are torn between this modalidad and another, think of two or three degrees you like, check which subjects they weight, and see which modalidad lets you take them. And talk to your school counselor: that is what they are there for.

Common questions

  • Which subjects does the Science and Technology Bachillerato have?

The common subjects of every Bachillerato and, as modalidad subjects, Matemáticas I in the first year and Matemáticas II or Mathematics Applied to the Social Sciences II in the second, plus two subjects per year. The options are Biology, Geology and Environmental Sciences, Physics and Chemistry (separate subjects in the second year), Technical Drawing and Technology and Engineering.

  • Which subjects should I choose to study Medicine?

Biology and Chemistry are usually weighted, so it is worth taking them in the second year. Check the weightings at the universities you like, because each one sets its own.

  • Can I study a humanities degree with the Science Bachillerato?

Yes. Any Bachillerato modalidad gives access to any university degree. What changes is which subjects you take into the PAU and which can be weighted for the degree you want.

  • Is it the hardest Bachillerato?

No modalidad is harder in general. It asks for steady work in maths and sciences, and it is easier when those subjects interest you.
