01
What is 4º ESO like now?
4º ESO combines common subjects, a maths choice and three materias de opción that you pick yourself.
The common subjects are the same for everyone: Educación Física, Geografía e Historia, Lengua Castellana y Literatura (plus the co-official language and its literature, if your region has one) and a foreign language. For maths you choose between Matemáticas A and Matemáticas B.
Then you choose three materias de opción out of these ten: Biología y Geología, Digitalización, Economía y Emprendimiento, Expresión Artística, Física y Química, Formación y Orientación Personal y Profesional, Latín, Música, Segunda Lengua Extranjera and Tecnología. Your region may add one or more optativas.
The law gives 4º an orienting role: it is there to bring you closer to what comes next, whether Bachillerato or FP, and to let you try things before you decide. It is not a choice for life.
02
Do académicas and aplicadas still exist?
No. “Enseñanzas académicas” and “enseñanzas aplicadas” belonged to the previous law and no longer exist under the LOMLOE.
In one line: Matemáticas Académicas and Matemáticas Aplicadas are now Matemáticas B and Matemáticas A. The two 4º tracks (académicas for Bachillerato, aplicadas for FP) are gone, and the materias de opción take their place.
Many pages still use the old names. If you read “choose académicas if you want to do Bachillerato”, that information is out of date. Today no path is closed: any combination lets you keep studying.
03
What is an itinerario in 4º ESO?
An itinerario is a way some schools and regions group the materias de opción, but it is not a category in the law.
The law lets each region arrange the materias de opción into blocks aimed at each Bachillerato modalidad or at FP fields. So your school might offer, for example, a “sciences option” with Física y Química and Biología y Geología already together, or let you choose more freely.
The practical step is to ask for your school’s enrolment sheet: it shows which combinations really exist and which do not fit the timetable.
04
Matemáticas A or B?
Matemáticas B is usually recommended if you are thinking of the Sciences Bachillerato or Social Sciences with maths, and Matemáticas A focuses more on using maths in practical situations.
Both give access to any Bachillerato and to FP. The difference is the approach: Matemáticas B goes deeper into the algebra and functions you will need in Matemáticas I and II; Matemáticas A works more with real-life problems, statistics and everyday finance.
If you are torn between Sciences and something else, Matemáticas B keeps more doors open with less catching up later. If maths is hard for you and you are clear you will go towards Humanities, Arts or an FP without much calculation, Matemáticas A can be a sensible choice.
05
Which materias de opción help, by goal
A quick map. These are not requirements, just combinations that prepare you better for what comes next.
Sciences and Technology Bachillerato
Matemáticas B, plus Física y Química and Biología y Geología. If engineering appeals to you, Tecnología fits as the third.
Humanities and Social Sciences Bachillerato
Latín if you are thinking of Humanities, Economía y Emprendimiento if you are thinking of Social Sciences. Segunda Lengua Extranjera or Música round it off well.
Arts Bachillerato
Expresión Artística and Música, plus Digitalización if design or audiovisual work interests you.
General Bachillerato
A varied mix: for example Economía y Emprendimiento, Digitalización and a science or a language.
FP Grado Medio
Tecnología, Digitalización, Economía y Emprendimiento or Formación y Orientación Personal y Profesional, depending on the field that draws you.
I don’t know yet
Matemáticas B and a balanced combination, for example a science, a practical subject and one you simply enjoy.
06
What should I choose for the Sciences Bachillerato?
If you want to do the Sciences Bachillerato, the most useful choice is Matemáticas B, Física y Química and Biología y Geología.
It is not compulsory: you can enter Sciences with another combination. But in 1º Bachillerato you will have Matemáticas I and subjects such as Física y Química or Biología, Geología y Ciencias Ambientales, and arriving without that base from 4º means a bigger jump.
For the third materia de opción, think about what draws you within the sciences. If health or biology pulls you, the two sciences already cover a lot and you can choose something you enjoy. If engineering or computing appeals to you, Tecnología or Digitalización make sense.
07
And for Humanities and Social Sciences, or Arts?
For Humanities, Latín prepares you best; for Social Sciences, Economía y Emprendimiento and Matemáticas B; for Arts, Expresión Artística and Música.
In Humanities it is usual to take Latín in Bachillerato, so starting in 4º gives you a head start. In Social Sciences it is usual to take Matemáticas Aplicadas a las Ciencias Sociales, and Matemáticas B makes that step easier, although coming from Matemáticas A is also possible if you put in a little extra effort at the start.
If you are thinking of Arts, remember there are two paths within it: one more visual (drawing, design, image) and one of music and performing arts. Choose the materia de opción closest to yours.
08
And if I want to do FP?
For FP, choose the materias de opción that resemble the field you are interested in, because with the ESO certificate you can enter any Grado Medio.
If electricity, mechanics or computing appeal to you, Tecnología and Digitalización bring you closer to that kind of work. If you are thinking of administration, sales or running your own business, Economía y Emprendimiento. If you do not know which field yet, Formación y Orientación Personal y Profesional is designed for exactly that.
And you close nothing: from a Grado Medio you can move on to a Grado Superior, and from there to university.
09
Does it change by region?
Partly: the common subjects and the ten materias de opción are the same across Spain, but each region decides how they are grouped and which optativas it adds.
Some regions arrange the materias de opción in fixed blocks; others let you choose more freely. On top of that, each school can only offer what its teachers and timetable allow.
So the most reliable guide is your school’s enrolment sheet and a conversation with your tutor or the guidance department.
10
What if I get it wrong?
If you get it wrong, nothing serious happens: with the ESO certificate you can do any Bachillerato or a Grado Medio, whatever you chose in 4º.
What can happen is that in 1º Bachillerato you need to catch up in a subject. It is more work at the start, but it is doable, and many people do it every year.
What helps most is knowing yourself a little better: what you like doing, what you are good at and what kind of work you can picture. That matters more than any perfect combination.
Common questions
Does my 4º ESO choice close off any Bachillerato?
No. With the ESO certificate you can enter any Bachillerato modalidad. Some combinations prepare you better, but none leaves you out.
Can I do the Sciences Bachillerato with Matemáticas A?
Yes, you can. Catching up in Matemáticas I will take a bit more effort, so it is worth revising algebra and functions before you start.
How many materias de opción do you choose in 4º ESO?
Three, out of ten. Your region or school may group them into blocks, so check your school’s enrolment sheet.
What are matemáticas académicas and aplicadas?
They were the names under the previous law. Today they are Matemáticas B (formerly académicas) and Matemáticas A (formerly aplicadas).
Do I need specific 4º subjects to do FP?
No. With the ESO certificate you can enter any Grado Medio. Choosing subjects close to the field you like just helps you arrive with a stronger base.
Can I change my materias de opción once the year has started?
It depends on your school and region. If you want to change, ask as soon as possible, because it gets harder as the year goes on.
